We live in MI, too, but down south (near Ann Arbor), and boy do I know what you mean about the housing market here! We were thinking about moving to a new house with land (drool!), but then the realities of trying to sell our current house set in. We just didn't think it would be wise to take such a loss as we would likely have to to get out, so here we sit, committed to making it work. It does help us develop creativity and cut down on unnecessary junk since we barely have room for the things we think we do need, let alone the things we know we don't!
