A Toy Story

Our modern world contains an unlimited selection of toys. We could entertain our children ad infinitum and never see the same toy on any given day if cost and over-indulgence were not issues. So, we must choose – wisely.

Playmobil. That is my choice hands down. Playmobil consists of small, somewhat flexible, plastic figures centered around creative themes. Children spend countless hours building fortresses, furnishing homes and palaces, chasing pirates, corraling livestock, planning villages, and even manning modern hospitals. Playmobil unleashes children’s imaginations.

Playmobil has longevity on its side. The German company has been around, in one form or another for years. Adults that enjoyed hours of play with these diminutive figures and their accessories during their childhood wait with bated breath to observe their little ones delight in Playmobil.

Playmobil is a bit pricey, but that is its only negative feature. However, the dollar-value is tremendous when you consider the hours of creative playtime it inspires. It is quite durable (my 5-year-old now plays with the figures my 21-year-old enjoyed as a child). It helps to develop fine motor skills and encourages development of communicative skills.

My children begin playing with Playmobil when they are about four years of age and continue to enjoy it for six or seven years (until they are about eleven or twelve). The small pieces can be a safety issue for toddlers and a little frustrating for younger children.

Playmobil provides lovely, traditional playtime for children.

Yep! My kids LOVE Playmobil!!!!! At a garage sale recently I found a huge batch for about $7. Some of it was “vintage” and included some cool pieces like an astronaut, firemen with accessories and Western themed pieces. Some I’m saving for my son for Xmas – but I gave them the rest to pick through and see what they wanted to keep – and they are keeping it all!

I hate all the pieces – but they are so cute and especially my son can play happily with them for a lonnnng time.

Edi, It is amazing how long children will play with Playmobil. You’re re – the little pieces can be overwhelming but no more than Lego. I organize the figures in clear, plastic drawers. It works fairly well.

I love the fact that this is a German made product. Sounds like something I need to put on my grandson’s list for Christmas. Thanks SO much!

  4. Thanks for this recommendation…I had been debating on whether or not to take the expensive plunge.

I have found great Playmobil buys on e-bay. You just have to be careful and have the time to work e-bay!

Those are great toys. Well worth the money. We love them.

Thanks for the comment. I’ll have to look up these toys. :)

Unfortunately, my kids aren’t really into playing with Playmobil (go figure), but we all love looking at them in the catalogue. Have you seen the nifty Egyptian stuff (pyramid and all) that Playmobil has just launched in Europe?

Thanks for this suggestion…….I am always looking for new ideas for my grandchildren!….They look like great toys!

I also ranked Playmobil as a favorite toy for WFMW. We love it, and I just bought a Playmobil advent calendar with a Santa woodland scene for the Christmas season.

Oh, the memories of Playmobile and my children….When we moved cross country awhile back, these were boxed up along with other classic, timeless toys and marked “grandma toys” for when I’m a grandma. Our son had the fort and our daughters had all the playhouse “rooms” but not the actual dollhouse. Instead, they would set up entire mansions and villages with the lids of the containers being the boundaries for whatever home or shop they were arranging. Sometimes brother would join in with his men and horses. They came in handy for years, sometimes even being combined with the more grownup dollhouse later on.

    Highly recommended!

Playmobil does rock! We have the Christmas set and it has been a HUGE hit for the past 3 Christmases! The kids LOVE IT! If you don’t mind all the tiny parts, this is well worth the money (plus, they forget all about Mommy’s porcelein nativity set up on the mantle, oooh!)! Oh yeah, you can get the wise men to go with it, too!
