Comparing Notes

I often wonder what it is about blogging that draws people. Why do we blog at all? Why do we read other blogs? Why has blogging exploded as a form of communication in recent years?

My high-school literature class is reading An Experiment in Criticism by C. S. Lewis this semester. As I was preparing my lecture notes yesterday, I came across a quote that explained, in a nutshell, why people love to blog:

“Being the sort of people we are, we ant not only to have but also to analyse, understand, and express, our experiences. And being people at all — being human, that is social, animals — we want to ‘compare notes’, not only as regards literature, but as regards food, landscape, a game, or an admired common acquaintance. We love to hear exactly how others enjoy what we enjoy ourselves.”

Why do you enjoy blogging and reading others’ blogs?

I totally agree. For me it is also to create a space, “my world” if you will with all that I love.

    Hi Emily,
Thanks for visiting me and your nice comment. I blog to promote my little business mostly…I post things I have worked on to see if people like them! But I also love to look in on blogs…they are a window into other people’s lives which is facinating.

Don’t you think blogging/writing helps you organize your thoughts? I think by trying to get my thoughts in written form it really helps me to organize my thinking. And I totally agree with the quote you chose!!

I love to blog because I love to write. As Grace said, I’ve found that blogging is a way for me to organize my thoughts and make sense of my world. I also like to use my blog share how God has blessed me, challenged me, and grown me. It also makes me a bit more transparent.

Some might say I like to read the blogs of others because I’m nosy! I suppose that is somewhat true. I enjoy seeing how others live and am constantly being encouraged by what these bloggers share. I also learn countless things and am introduced to many opportunities by way of other blogs!

It’s hard to think about what life was life before blogging!

I agree with the others – I think we, as women, enjoy the connection and the friendship, and mainly just sharing what is going on in our lives with others. :) I love your writing, by the way!

P.S. Please tell your Mom happy Mother’s Day for me!

  6. Emily says:

Happy Mother’s Day to you too!:-D

Thanks for the great comments! I think blogging allows people to connect with people that they otherwise would “miss”. I tend to be a nosy person, too, and just love peeking into other people’s worlds!
